Why January is the Time for Transformation
Look And Feel Great in January With Helen Taylor
During the festive season, you’re likely to hear the expression: “Go on…it’s Christmas” more than a handful of times. After all, it’s the stock answer to a number of questions, including ‘Should I have another mince pie?’, ‘Can I have the last Malteser in the Celebrations box?’ and ‘Am I a bit piggy for scoffing yet another wedge of cheese with my wine?’
Just a week later, though, and the expression emerging from people’s mouths is quite different. ‘New Year, new me’ is bandied around quite a lot as the clock ticks to welcome in another 12 months. But what is it about January specifically – and a new year in general – that has us all considering a transformation or two? A trimmer waist line, whiter teeth, a new haircut…admit it; you’ve thought about at least one of those in the first month of the calendar year.
We took to the good old Internet to find out why people are motivated to make a change at the start of a new year. This site suggests that, for some people, “…it takes something radical for them to change their ways.” – and what could be better than a new year to do just that?
Psychology Today says that we should look at ourselves ‘on a daily basis’ and not just at the start of a new year. Holding ourselves to account year-round will help us to accomplish more goals.
But when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, people that make them do tend to stick to a vow or goal more easily than those who don’t make one in the first place.
The reason for this is because we tend to tell someone else about our resolutions, which is a great way to hold ourselves accountable. As our own clinic manager, Chloe, said in a recent team meeting: ‘I use Monday of every week as my fresh start’.
The fact is, we all like to start a new goal with ‘a fresh slate’ – and by beginning in a new week, month or year, we can mentally wipe clean said slate and ‘forget’ the sins of the former week, month of year.
Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolutions: Some Tips from the Helen Taylor Aesthetics Team
The best way to stick to your resolutions is to start small. Yes, you may have a few goals on your list, but don’t try to smash them all at once. Instead, tackle one at a time – whether it’s to quit smoking, save money, or finally streamline your figure with some 3DLipo– begin gradually and don’t be too hard on yourself along the way.
This tip goes hand in hand with the one above – but it’s vital that you’re realistic about what you want to achieve, as well as how long you have to achieve it.
If you’re hoping to lose weight, a healthy loss of 2 lbs a week (totalling 8 lbs per month) is the way to go, rather than expecting to drop a stone or more in the same period. Make goals you know you can reach, and you’ll be setting yourself up for success.
Have you also considered setting a goal that’s extremely easy to keep, too? Treating yourself to a monthly facial is a resolution that you’ll find a doddle to achieve, as we all love a spot of pampering. Plus, when you spread the cost of your treatments with our finance deal, you have every reason to treat yourself and your skin.
Don’t Put Off a Big Change
The easiest way to smash your New Year’s goals is to make a bold move before you can talk yourself out of it. Whether that’s booking yourself in for a treatment, signing up for that gym membership and putting your name down for a class or two, or strengthening your skill set with a new course at night school.
Go on; you can do it – and we’ll look forward to hearing all about it here at Helen Taylor Aesthetics.
