How To Choose Between Wrinkle Treatments And Dermal Fillers

With Christmas fast approaching, my email inbox has been bursting at the seams. It seems that everyone wants to look fantastic in time for the festive season!

It’s lovely to see how many people are starting to recognise the long-term value of aesthetic beauty treatments and how much they can boost both appearance and confidence.

Among my most popular requests from both men and women is the desire to reduce wrinkles and smooth out fine lines.

I offer two services in this aspect and recommend treatment tailored to each individual situation. You can book a free anti-wrinkle consultation to discuss this further. In the mean time, I’ve used this post to give you some insight into these highly-sought-after treatments!

So what’s the difference between Wrinkle Treatments and Dermal Fillers?

Anti-Wrinkle Treatments are the most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedure in the UK. This treatment works on the upper part of the face to relax the muscles and smooth out the skin. As a treatment designed for long-term use, it works by re-educating the skin into a new, fresh cycle and encouraging regeneration. Wrinkle Treatments work to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, in particular frown lines, forehead lines, crows feet, bunny lines and top lip lines. I use narrow needles to inject purified protein into the key, pre-defined target areas without any need for anaesthetic. It will be over before you know it!

Dermal Fillers are different as they act superficially to fill out hollows and wrinkles without treating the muscle underneath. I use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers to replace lost collagen for improved skin elasticity and a more youthful appearance. Again, there is no anaesthetic required but I will apply a numbing cream for your comfort before injecting fillers into the target areas using a slimline needle. It’s tiny. Fillers are typically used for brow shaping and lifting, as well as to enhance sunken cheeks, thin lips and a droopy chin. They are also used in non-surgical facelift or nose reshaping treatments and work well to disguise eye bags.

The key difference is that fillers work to replace lost volume and plump up the skin whereas wrinkle relaxers work on specific areas and target all the way down to the core of the muscle for long-term effects and regeneration.

When should I get treatment?

Both Wrinkle Treatments and Dermal Fillers are ideal for those who would like fresh, rejuvenated skin and to reduce the appearance of fine or deep lines and wrinkles. The natural ageing process, stress, smoking and sun exposure can all take their toll on our skin and I see both men and women from their 20s to their 80s who wish to have treatment.

How long does each treatment last?

Wrinkle Treatments are designed for use in the long-term to give your skin the chance to re-educate itself. Treatment plans are different for everyone but I usually recommend waiting between four and six months for your second treatment. I then recommend follow-up treatments every three or four months after this. Once your skin adjusts and the impact of the treatment really starts to take effect, I may ask you to return just once or twice a year. It’s all down to the individual and your aesthetic ambitions!

With dermal fillers, results can last anything from 4-24 months. This is because there are many different types of fillers available to suit all clients. I will advise on the best choice depending on the level of skin damage and your own preference.

Do they hurt?

In a word, no! You may experience mild swelling, bruising and redness in the area for around 24 hours afterwards. This is due to the injection and is nothing to be concerned about. It can be covered with makeup or you can simply leave it to naturally fade away.

What areas do they treat?

Both treatments are traditionally used for the face, particularly around the eyes, forehead and around the mouth. Dermal fillers can also be used to boost lips for a thicker, fuller pout. In this case, effects last for around six months.
